We were parked outside the field where as children I weaved tales of being the woman I am now. Sitting on the roof of her car with Prince's "Scandalous" blasting out the open windows, we starred into the hazy dark blue sky. I marveled how the city lights never let us know the black ocean of scattered jewels. She leaned over and took a bite out of the Twix bar I held in my hand. I didn't care. She was my sister without blood ties. Knew it all and never judged, for that gift I'd give her nearly anything.

"What's it like to be a mistress?" she asked while chewing the cookie caramel combination.

"It's saying goodbye a lot. And loving anyway. Every time you meet, you know you'll be apart. Each time you hope it isn't the last good-bye."

"That sounds hard."

"It can be."

"Is it worth it?"

I smiled to myself, "Always."

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a tiny remote. Pushing buttons, Prince had disappeared, and a soft buzzing could be heard. Now it was James Blunt singing. She knows it to be one of my favorite songs.
