Poetry: French Love Poetry

I have always found the ornamental language of old love poetry so charming, and its cavity inducing sweetness comical.

By Chretien de Troyes in "Erec et Enide"

Plus ot que n'est la flors de lis
cler et blanc le front et le vis;
sor la color, par grant mervoille,
d'une fresche color vermoille
que Nature li ot donee,
estoit sa face enluminee.
Si oel si grant clarte radoient
que deus estoiles ressambloient.

The lily-flower is not more fair,
And white than was her brow, and there,
Marvellous to tell, the rosy hue
Of her complexion mingled to
Create the radiance of her face,
A miracle of natural grace;
And her bright eyes gave forth such light
As made them seem two stars by night.
